Samsung Galaxy S5: Hotspot Settings Guide

This guide will walk you through setting up your Samsung Galaxy S5 to become your personal mobile hotspot that will allow you to share your internet with other devices. Cited in this post are ways to access and turn on the Hotspot feature, how to configure it and how to allow and disallow other devices from connecting to it.

This guide is intended for newbies and owners who are still learning to operate and manipulate their device. Advanced owners may need not to read it as you may have already known how to effectively turn your device into a mobile hotspot. But it will be helpful for others if you shared this post.


Important Note: Mobile hotspot drains battery faster and prolonged use will heat up your device. Therefore, it is best to turn off mobile hotspot when not in use.

Turn Hotspot On / Off


To turn on or turn off mobile Hotspot on your Samsung Galaxy S5, follow these steps:
  1. From the Home screen, tap the Apps icon.
  2. Find and tap Settings.
  3. Scroll to and tap Hotspot.
  4. Tap the ON/OFF switch to turn Hotspot on or off.

Configure Hotspot


You can set mobile hotspot to work according to your preferences. You can do this by going to the Hotspot screen: Settings > Hotspot. Once you are on the Hotspot screen, tap the Menu icon to pull up the sub menu, which contains the following:

Configure - this section contains options that let you directly configure how mobile hotspot works on your phone.
  • Network SSID: let's you view and change the name of your mobile hotspot. The SSID is the name you can find when you let your other devices scan for available networks within range.
  • Hide my device: when this option is enabled, your hotspot will not be visible to other devices. To connect, you need to manually set up the connection using the SSID you used as well as the password.
  • Security: this will allow you to set security level for your mobile hotspot.
  • Password: if you chose a security level that uses a password, then you can set your password. The default password is  you mobile phone number.
  • Show password: when enabled, the Password field will display the real characters of your password.
  • Show advanced options: when this option is enabled, you will gain access to advanced options including the maximum number of connections allowed and Broadcast channel.

Timeout settings - this will allow you to set how long the Hotspot remains active if there's no activity.

LAN settings - under this section, you will have access to options that will let you view and configure settings related to your mobile hotspot as a Local Area Network.
  • IP address: you can view the default IP address, or you can tap it to enter a valid IPv4 address.
  • Subnet mask: allows you to view the default subnet mask or enter a valid one.
  • DHCP: this will allow you to turn DHCP on or off. When enabled, your Galaxy S5 will automatically assigns IP addresses to devices that could successfully connect to the hotspot.
  • Starting IP: allows you to view and enter valid starting IP address. When devices connect to your network, the phone will assign an IP address between the starting and ending IP addresses.
  • Ending IP: allows you to view and enter valid ending IP address.
  • Lease time: you can set a length of time a connected device can use the assigned IP address.
  • Maximum DHCP users: this will let you set the number of devices that could connect to your hotspot simultaneously.

Allowed Devices


You have full administrative right to your mobile hotspot. Therefore, you can control how many and who can connect to your network. To do that, follow these steps:
  1. From the Home screen, tap the Apps icon.
  2. Find and tap Settings.
  3. Scroll to and tap Hotspot.
  4. Tap the Menu icon and then Allowed Devices.
  5. Tap the plus sign (+) and then enter the device's Device name and MAC address. 
  6. Tap OK to allow the newly added device to connect to your hotspot.
