Quick guide to change USB connection options on Samsung Galaxy S5

Modifying or configuring the USB settings on your Samsung Galaxy S5 is important to let your phone sync, charge or perform certain task when connected to a computer.

You can choose between the Media Transfer Protocol (MTP) and USB Mass Storage (UMS or MSC) modes to enable file transfer between the two devices. Both of these modes have similar functions, allowing you to transfer files, photos, videos, etc.

Follow these steps to change USB connection options on your Samsung Galaxy S5:

1. Plug the USB cable into the phone.

2. Once the USB cable is plugged in, touch and drag the notification bar going down.

3. Under Notifications, touch the option that says, "Connected as a camera." Doing so will prompt you with other USB options available for you to choose from.

4. Touch the option you want to use. For example, Media device or MTP. Once selected, a check mark will show on the box next to the option you prefer to use.

5. Look at the above notification. It should say your phone is now connected as a media device or camera, depending on the option you selected a while back.

The MTP allows you to use other functions on the device. It supports Windows Media Digital Rights Management or MSDRM. While connected, there is no limitation on the file size to be transferred and is used on a PC only mode.

On the other hand, UMS or MSC does not allow other functionality while connected. The MSC or UMS mode allows you to play files through a car-kit and can be used on a Windows or Mac computer. Unlike MTP, there may be a 4GB file size limit on this mode.

For example, you missed a notification, the phone would emit light with a pattern to tell you about it without actually unlocking the screen. Believe it or not, it makes life a little easier if you knew the meaning of the colors and their rhythms.
