Samsung Galaxy S5 Can't Send / Receive Text Messages [How To Fix]

I recently looked into an issue involving the new Samsung Galaxy S5. Many owners complained about not being able to send and receive SMS or text messages so I talked to people who contacted me regarding this issue. I fortunately talked to three users and they have their own way of fixing the issue.

The first case was actually minor. The user said the problem happens randomly; he can send SMS now but can't later. There is not specific time of the day when this problem happens. He also tried calling his service provider and confirmed it wasn't a network problem. The settings in his phone remained the same so they weren't the problem.

Once the problem starts, it wouldn't be fixed unless the user would do something about it. In this case, though, the remedy is easy--system reboot. Once restarted, the phone could successfully send text messages until it can't again. Then it becomes a cycle. Of course, no one would want to go through the hassle of rebooting the phone when it can't send or receive a text message.

So, for the first case, a reboot is an effective remedy. You should try it if you're currently suffering from this problem, although there is no guaranteed resolution.

That said, the second user I talked said reboot is useless. He has the same problem as with the first user but his is more frequent, although there's also no specific time of day when the issue happens. Clearing the cache of the Messaging app temporarily fixes the issue but not for long. He added that he thinks it's just a glitch in the stock messaging app and no other that's why clearing the cache fixes it.

  1. From a Home screen, tap Apps.
  2. Find the Settings icon and tap on it.
  3. Scroll to Applications section and tap Application Manager.
  4. Swipe left or right to display contents of All tab.
  5. Scroll to and tap Messaging.
  6. Tap Clear Cache.

The third user I've talked to had a more complicated issue. The problem started around 11:00 PM, according to him. He wasn't able to send a text message and at the same time didn't receive responses from people he was talking to through SMS before the issue started. Reboot and clearing cache (and even data) didn't fix it.

The problem went on for two days because it took him a couple of days to backup all his data, apps and contacts. He then proceeded with doing factory reset. It fixed the issue and he was able to use the phone for text messaging for 3 to 4 days then the problem started again. So, basically, he has to perform factory reset every four days.

And oh, the normal factory reset through Settings wouldn't work for some reason, according to him. He has to boot the phone to recovery mode and perform factory reset from there.

  1. Press and hold the following three buttons at the same time: Volume Up, Home key and Power key.
  2. When the phone vibrates, release the Power key but continue to press and hold the Volume Up key and the Home key.
  3. When the Android System Recovery screen appears, release the Volume Up and Home keys.
  4. Press the Volume down key several times key to highlight 'wipe data / factory reset.'
  5. Press Power button to select.
  6. Press the Volume down key until 'Yes -- delete all user data' is highlighted.
  7. Press Power button to select and start the master reset.
  8. When the master reset is complete, 'Reboot system now' is highlighted.
  9. Press the Power key to restart the device.

There you have it. Three similar problems and three solutions. For those who have encountered this problem and have found a rather different workaround, do share it with us. You can reach me at harold@droidista.com.

Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Notification Lights and their Meaning

Like Samsung flagship smartphones, the Galaxy Note 3 also has a LED indicator located in the top-left corner in the front panel of your phone. The indicator emits three primary colors: Blue , Red and Green . The main purpose of the LED indicator is to notify you of the current condition or status of your phone. For example, you missed a notification, the phone would emit light with a pattern to tell you about it without actually unlocking the screen. Believe it or not, it makes life a little easier if you knew the meaning of the colors and their rhythms.
