Samsung Galaxy S5: Using the S Health & Heart Rate Monitor

You may have already known that Samsung's next generation flagship smartphone, otherwise known as the Samsung Galaxy S5, will come with a built-in heart rate monitor integrated into the pre-installed app S Health. This guide will walk you through using both S Health app and Heart Rate Monitor. This feature will, of course, be useful for people who are active and those who are conscious about their health.

People with heart diseases, however, are advised not to depend on this feature because while it is a good perk, accuracy may differ from the real heart rate monitors used by medical institutions.

S Health

The S Health app is Samsung's initiative to integrate health services with high-end devices. So we can expect that there are more services that would be integrated sooner or later.

1. From the Home screen of the Galaxy S5, tap the Apps icon.
2. Find and tap the S Health app.
3. Tap Next.
4. Read the terms and conditions, mark the I agree checkbox and tap Next. 
5. If you have a Samsung account, it is recommended you sign in so you can easily track your stats. You may tap Skip if you don't have one.
6. Now enter your name, gender, and date of birth, and then touch Next.
7. Enter your height and your weight, then hit Next.
8. Choose you activity level. You may choose from Level 1 through 5. Tap Next.
9. You may review your profile information and tap Start when finished.
10. The S Health main screen displays the day's statistics and graphical representations of your data. Touch the More icon in the upper-left corner to access S Health features.
11. From this menu, you can open S Health features that help you track your steps, exercise, food intake, and more. Click Next to complete the steps.

Heart Rate Monitor

Once you have already setup the S Health app, you can immediately use the Heart Rate Monitor.

1. Launch the S Health app.
2. Tap the Heart Rate icon on the lower portion of the screen.
3. Information on how to use the service will display, tap OK to continue.
4. Now, at the back of your phone, place your finger over the sensor.
5. Wait a few moments until the phone returns your current heart rate in beats per minute (bpm).
6. Touch the Log icon at the top of the screen to view your past heart rates if you logged before.
7. Touch the Back icon to go back to Heart Rate main screen.
8. If  you have an external heart rate monitor, touch the Connect accessories icon to sync with it. Touch the More options icon to reset your reading, share your heart rate, and more. Touch the Chart icon to view a chart of past heart rates. Click NEXT to complete the steps.
